The Milwaukee Police Department is investigating a shooting incident in which a 12-year-old girl was injured early this morning.
The incident occurred in the 1500 block of N. 39th Street at about 12:50 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012. The girl suffered non-life threatening injuries after gunshots struck the home she was in. It appears she was scratched on her back and arms by fragments. She was conveyed to a local hospital for treatment. She was held overnight for observation and is expected to be released today.
Milwaukee Police were already in the area of 39th & Cherry last evening for a targeted violent crime reduction operation. Officers had made multiple arrests on the street in the past few days for disorderly behavior in the public spaces. This incident is believed to have stemmed from an earlier argument between a group of girls. This incident is not believed to be related to a shooting in this area on June 11, contrary to media reports.
Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact the Milwaukee Police Department at 414-935-7360. The investigation into this incident continues and we will provide updates when we have more facts to share.
