Good work by Neighborhood Task Force officers and citizen cooperation led to the location of a vehicle sought for a fatal hit and run and the arrest of a suspect.
On Saturday, September 1st, 2012 at 4:42 p.m., Javier Ortiz was operating a 2008 Kawasaki ZX600 eastbound in the 1900 block of W Mitchell St. A n auto that was traveling southbound on S Pearl St crossed W. Mitchell St in the path of the motorcycle. In an apparent attempt to avoid the collision, Ortiz made a hard application of the brakes and was ejected from the motorcycle. Following the ejection, Ortiz struck the right side of the rear bumper of the fleeing auto. He died as a result of his injuries.
Based on video evidence, it should have been apparent to the driver of the vehicle that they were involved in the crash.
On Wednesday, September 5, police recieved a call from a citizen who provided information on the car depicted in a wanted poster on television news. NTF officers conducted a search, located the vehicle and arrested the suspect. He was arrested for Duty Upon Striking Causing Death. The District Attorney is expected to review the case today.
