District Two Officers Help Deliver Baby

Three Milwaukee Police Officers are being credited with helping to deliver a baby early Tuesday morning on the city’s near south side.

While on patrol at about 7 a.m. on February 26, Police Officer Peter Ulatowski was flagged down for a car stopped in traffic at the intersection of West Beecher Street and South 4th Street. Inside he found the passenger, who had just finished giving birth in the car and needed medical attention. Officer Ulatowski promptly alerted the dispatcher and asked for the Milwaukee Fire Department to respond.

Hearing this information, Police Officers Chad Stiles and Jon Duchateau responded. Officer Stiles, who is a trained Emergency Medical Technician and Registered Nurse evaluated the mother and child and found that immediate medical attention was required. With the assistance of the other officers, Officer Stiles used his medical kit to cut the attached umbilical cord. Once the cord was severed, the mother’s discomfort was relieved, along with the potential harm to the mother and her child.

The Milwaukee Fire Department arrived a short time later and both the mother and child were taken to a local hospital. Both are doing well and expected to be returning home in the next couple of days.

All three officers are assigned to the late shift at the MPD’s Second District.
