On February 25, 1987, Officer Dennis Gorlewski died in the line of duty from injuries that he received from a fatal motorcycle accident. Officer Gorlewski was performing an escort while riding his motorcycle. As he traveled through the intersection of South 27th Street and West National Avenue, he was struck by a semitrailer. The semitrailer collided with another truck, which caused Officer Gorlewski to be pinned between the two trucks.
