Milwaukee Police personnel do outstanding work every day, and twice a year we take an evening to recognize them at the Milwaukee Police Merit Awards Ceremony. This year’s event will be held Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 6 p.m. at the Milwaukee Police Academy, 6680 N. Teutonia Ave. We hope local media will choose to cover this event but we will be sharing the inspiring stories of the recipients here at milwaukeepolicenews.com for all to read. We ask our readers to forward these great stories to those in your social networks so we can spread the good news about MPD!
Let’s get started:
The Unit Service Award for work on Operation Slim Jim will be presented to the following members: Intelligence Fusion Center Detectives Delores Applegate and Christopher Blaszak and Police Officers Mickal J. Chemlick, Eric J. Draeger and Mark E. Harms. From the Neighborhood Task Force, Police Officer Shawn M. Burger. From District 5 Police Officers William R. Feely, Michael L. Gasser, Daniel G. Knitter, Lori M. Kowalefski, Gregory M. Kuspa, Brian D. Matte, Kevin D. Matte, Joseph A. Serio, Joseph L. Szcyubialka, Daniel J. Vandervest and Paul S. Vento.
In Operation Slim Jim, Detectives and Police Officers from District 5 and the Intelligence Fusion Center worked together to investigate the high number of auto thefts occurring in District 5. Through their investigation they learned that unscrupulous towing companies were operating illegally and using loopholes in Wisconsin Law to remove autos from the street and quickly sell them to salvage yards for scrap value. Through the investigation and arrest of the individuals responsible for these thefts, District 5 experienced a 32 percent reduction in auto thefts for the month of November 2011 and a 43 percent reduction for the month of December 2011.
Great work by this MPD team!
