Officer Saves Suicidal Subject

A Milwaukee Police Sergeant spent a little over an hour negotiating with a suicidal subject today, leading to a peaceful end of a tense afternoon on a busy bridge.

Police were called to a report of a 23-year-old man standing on the Center Street bridge between N. 7th and N. 8th Streets at 1:47 p.m. today. District 5 Sgt. James Bryce, who received certification in Crisis Intervention Training and also received Hostage Negotiator Training, responded and immediately began establishing a rapport with the man. Sgt. Bryce talked calmly with the man, attempting to convince him not to end his life by jumping from the bridge. At 2:49 p.m., with the assistance of the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, the situation ended peacefully and without injury.

About 300 members of the Milwaukee Police Department have received Crisis Intervention Training, a program recognized by the Milwaukee chapter of the National Association for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) for its contribution in understanding the challenges faced by the mentally ill in society.
