Officers Receive One of MPD’s Highest Honors

It is one of the Milwaukee Police Department’s highest honors – and those attending the Department’s Merit Awards Ceremony tomorrow will see the officers receive the Medal of Valor – Combat,  in person.

This award, and others will be presented Wednesday, November 14 at 6 p.m. at the Milwaukee Police Training Academy, 6680 N. Teutonia Ave.

On Monday, April 4, 2011, District 2 Officers Michael A. Urbaniak and Scott A. Voeks responded to a Battery-Cutting in the 2100 block of West National Avenue. Upon arrival, they saw a man with a knife standing near an older woman. The officers ordered the man to drop his weapon, but instead the armed man advanced toward Officer Urbaniak and the woman. Fearing for their safety, Officer Voeks discharged his weapon, striking the still-armed suspect. Officer Urbaniak then provided first aid to the woman who had been injured by the suspect, while Officer Voeks gave first aid to the suspect. Both officers showed exceptional bravery and composure in the face of this dangerous and chaotic situation.
