ShotSpotter, MPD Arrest Felon with Firearm
May 5th, 2012 by milwaukeepolice
The ShotSpotter gun locator system helps Milwaukee Police sneak up on criminals who fire guns with impunity on our streets.
When Sgt. Todd Smolen heard about a shooting from an informant, the intel came right from his computer. On May 3, 2012 at 12:32 a.m., the ShotSpotter system used by MPD told him how many shots were fired and where. Sgt. Over the police radio, Sgt. Smolen alerted Officers William Krumnow, Deb Stacey, Robert Smith and Matt VanDrisse, who quickly responded to the address and location described.
As soon as officers pulled up in the 1400 block of W. Clarke St., Officer Stacey saw a man run inside the side door of a house right in the area where ShotSpotter had pinpointed. Officers cleared the house and once inside, they found the suspect hiding upstairs pretending to be sleeping. A handgun was recovered sitting on top of the kitchen table. Casings and ammunition were recovered outside the house and the suspect inside was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Strong teamwork among our officers is how we get the dangerous criminals off the street.
