TONIGHT: Citizens Awarded for Helping Catch Homicide Suspect
November 14th, 2012 by milwaukeepolice
It’s not only police conduct that earns recognition – Milwaukee Police Chief Edward A. Flynn will be presenting a citizen award for Valorous Conduct to to three citizens who went over and above for their fellow man. The awards will be presented at the Milwaukee Police Merit Awards ceremony on Wednesday, November 14 at 6 p.m. at the Milwaukee Police Training Academy, 6680 N. Teutonia Ave.
This crime was newsworthy when it occurred, and the presentation is equally notable. Lance Corporal Allen-Minley will be joining the ceremony via video conferencing from Okinawa, Japan, where he is stationed. Also receiving this award in person are Ms. Kameelia Allen-Minley and Mr. Jeffrey Bass.
On September 2, 2012, prior to his deployment, Lcpl. Kumasi Allen-Minley, his sister, Kameelia Allen-Minley and their friend, Jeffrey Bass went to Reservoir Park to see the city lights. As Ms. Allen-Minley and Mr. Bass sat on a bench enjoying the view, Lcpl. Allen-Minley saw a man jogging toward them. He noticed that the man was cursing and did not appear to be in a normal state of mind. When the agitated man sat down on the bench, Lcpl. Allen-Minley saw that he had a knife. Fearing for their safety, he quietly told his sister and Mr. Bass to leave, while he stayed behind, engaging the man in conversation.
After a few minutes, he saw that Mr. Bass was clearing the park, so he went to help him. They approached a woman who was lying on the ground who appeared to be sleeping, but they quickly realized she was deceased. Lcpl. Allen-Minley told his sister and friend to go to the car, while he called 9-1-1. As he was leaving the park, he noticed that the man was behind him. The three got into their car, followed the man to a gas station and then to a bus stop. With the information they provided to the dispatcher, the suspect was taken into custody without incident. The courageous actions of Lcpl. Kumasi Allen-Minley, Ms. Kameelia Allen-Minley and Mr. Jeffrey Bass resulted in the arrest of a dangerous individual who was intent on harming others.
We are grateful for those citizens who don’t hesitate to step in and help their fellow man.
