Every day, the men and women of the MPD go into the community and share the risks that those living in the most challenged neighborhoods do. These men and women paid the ultimate price for that service. It is a debt we can never repay, and we shall never forget.

Since their humble beginnings in 1855, the dedicated officers of the Milwaukee Police Department have made it their mission to protect the citizens of our great community. Here are a few milestones in the force’s history.
First police chief appointed: Chief William Beck.
First motorcycle introduced to patrol fleet.
First African-American officer appointed to the MPD, Judson W. Minor.
The original Milwaukee Police Horse Patrol begins.
"Frogmen" dive team established.
The Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) is formed. It is believed to be the oldest full-time SWAT team in America.
Ada Wright becomes the first female MPD officer.
The Milwaukee Police Department Canine Unit formed.
Arthur Jones becomes the first African-American chief.
Nan Hegerty becomes the first female police chief for the city.
MIRT (Major Incident Response Team) becomes operational.
Edward A. Flynn is sworn in as Milwaukee police chief.
Neighborhood Task Force established.
Edward Flynn – first police chief to be appointed for a second term.
